## 📖 Overview

From the lightweight Altitude to the ultimate all-weather Igloo, there's a Bushbuck puffer jacket to tackle any adventure. This guide takes a deep dive into the technical aspects of every puffer down jacket in our range.

**In this article:**

- Why our range trumps one do-it-all jacket
- What's inside the Altitude, our ultralight option for hikers
- How the Furnace stays lightweight while handling cold, wet conditions
- How the Polar X trades weight for durability
- Why the Igloo skips pit zips altogether
- How to wash a puffer jacket so it lasts for years

## Built For Different Jobs

We could make one puffer jacket and call it done, but different use cases demand their own set of features. So instead we've built a range where each jacket makes a deliberate trade-off, and we're upfront about what that trade-off is.

The Altitude is our ultralight option, built for hikers who care about every gram in the pack, using more down and less fabric to get warmth without weight. The Furnace handles rain and colder conditions while still sitting in the lightweight category, while the Polar X is a step up in durability, using tougher fabrics that add weight but hold up to harder use. The Igloo goes further still, dropping pit zips entirely so there's zero risk of water finding its way in. None of them is "the best" jacket; they're built for different days.

## Altitude: Built to Disappear in Your Pack

The [Altitude Ultralight Puffer Jacket](https://bushbuck.co.nz/products/altitude-ultralight-puffer) is aimed at hikers who don't want to feel their jacket in their pack. It pairs a lightweight nylon ripstop body with a tougher contrast panel where a backpack rubs, so the high-wear spots hold up without adding weight anywhere else.

- **Down and synthetic blend:** The Altitude has 140 grams of insulation, which is 50% RDS certified down with 700 fill power, and 50% Sorona® Aura synthetic fill: a lightweight polyester insulation material similar in concept to brands like Cordura and Lycra. Sorona® offers great warmth-to-weight ratio while also acting as a second line of defence to the waterproof DWR coating on the jacket's outer layer. Synthetic fibres keep the down propped up even when soaked, so the jacket still insulates rather than collapsing flat.
- **Fill power, explained:** This is the measurement of how much space a given weight of down puffs up to fill, not how much down is in the jacket. Baseline down (like you'll find at most outdoor stores) sits around 500–600 fill power. Ours is 700, which puts it in the same bracket as premium brands like Rab.
- **Hydrophobic, RDS-certified down:** Our down is treated to resist wetting out, and it's certified under the Responsible Down Standard, sourced ethically as a by-product of the meat industry.
- **Packable pocket:** One chest pocket is lined in stretch fabric, so the whole jacket packs down into it without needing bulky extra material.
- **Ventilation for on the move:** A set of poppers let you unclip the front and get airflow through.
- **Three-piece hood with wire peak:** Like many of our jackets, the Altitude's hood uses three panels rather than a simple two-panel hoodie shape, giving a more structured fit. A flexible wire in the peak lets you shape it against wind or light showers.

## Furnace: Waterproof Warmth Without the Weight

The [Furnace Waterproof Lightweight Puffer Jacket](https://bushbuck.co.nz/products/furnace-lt-waterproof-down-puffer-jacket?variant=40987836416099) bridges the gap between lightweight hiking puffers and heavy-duty winter jackets. It offers excellent warmth while remaining light enough for active outdoors use, making it ideal for those wanting waterproof protection without the weight of a canvas work jacket.

- **Fully waterproof, seam to seam:** The fabric is a 200 GSM nylon ripstop, laminated with a waterproof membrane and carrying a 10,000mm rating to the ASTM standard. Its seams are fully taped and sealed, which is what actually makes it waterproof rather than just water repellent.
- **Fused baffles:** The two fabric layers are bonded directly into sealed channels that the down is blown into, so there's no stitching anywhere for water to creep through.
- **Premium duck down:** The Furnace has 160 grams of insulation with a 90/10 down-to-feather ratio at 800 fill power, so it runs noticeably warmer than the Altitude.
- **Soft and durable lining:** The Furnace is lined with a tear-resistant 15D taffeta, treated for a soft feel and matte finish.
- **Packable:** Like the Altitude, it packs down into its own chest pocket for storage.
- **Pit zip ventilation and an adjustable hood** round it out, giving you airflow on the move.

## Polar X: Built to Take a Beating

The [Polar X Canvas Puffer Jacket](https://bushbuck.co.nz/products/polar-x-down-puffer-jacket?variant=36304412305) is Bushbuck's workhorse. Built around a highly durable canvas outer, it's designed for those who spend long days working outdoors and need warmth without sacrificing durability. Its tough outer fabric makes it one of the most hard-wearing jackets in the range.

- **Durable nylon canvas shell with water resistance:** The 230 GSM canvas is laminated with the same waterproof membrane and 10,000mm ASTM rating as the Furnace, but its seams aren't sealed, so we call it water resistant rather than waterproof. Instead, an internal storm flap runs behind the main zip, so if water does get past the surface, it's channelled to run down rather than working its way inside.
- **800-fill down insulation:** The Polar X has 260 grams of insulation, with a 90/10 down-to-feather ratio at 800 fill power, making it a step above the Furnace in warmth.
- **Removable hood:** After feedback from helicopter pilots and truck drivers, we made the hood fully removable on the Polar X.
- **Heavy-gauge zip:** The Polar X's main zip is a size up for extra strength and easier field repairs (size 10 from the standard size 8). It's also a reverse-coil design, flipped so a PU-coated tape faces outward for extra water resistance.
- **Fleece-lined hand pockets:** One of the most consistent pieces of positive feedback we get on this jacket.
- **Reinforced cuffs and raglan sleeves:** A panel is stitched around each sleeve edge for extra durability, and we used a raglan pattern for improved fit and movement around the shoulder for anyone working in it.
- **Internal stretch cuffs:** Spandex internal cuffs for comfort without sacrificing water resistance a the wrist.

## Igloo: Keeps the Heat In and Water Out

[The Igloo Waterproof Canvas Puffer Jacket](https://bushbuck.co.nz/products/igloo-waterproof-down-jacket?variant=33235243466851) is a best seller for a reason. It is fully waterproof, and the way we've achieved that shapes every decision on the jacket. No pit zips, no seams left exposed: just a simple, sealed shell built to keep you dry and toasty.

If you want a waterproof puffer jacket, this is the one to pick.

- **Durable canvas and fully seam-sealed:** A step up in toughness again from the Polar X, the Igloo has a 350 GSM nylon canvas outer shell. It is fully seam sealed and has a 10,000mm ASTM waterproof rating.
- **800-fill down insulation:** The Igloo is our warmest jacket with 290 grams of 800 fill power down. Like the Furnace and Polar X, it has a 90/10 down-to-feather ratio.
- **No pit zips or detachable hood, on purpose:** Every zip is a potential leak point, so the Igloo skips them entirely rather than risk it.
- **Spandex internal cuff:** Spandex dries fast and stays comfortable while still keeping water out at the wrist.
- **Internal hood adjusters:** Unlike the Polar X, which has its hood adjusters on the outside, the Igloo keeps them on the inside, avoiding rivets through the outer shell where water could otherwise get in.
- **Fleece-lined pockets **round it out, a comfortable detail that doesn't go unnoticed.

## Looking After Your Down

Down insulation needs a bit of care, and a couple of things are worth knowing before you assume something's gone wrong.

- **A feather working its way through the fabric is normal.** With thousands of feathers packed into a puffer jacket, a stray one occasionally pokes through a stitch line. If it happens, gently push it back through the fabric from the inside rather than pulling it out, which avoids leaving a hole.
- **If the loft feels flat, warmth is the fix.** Down needs a bit of heat to fully puff up, especially straight out of the packaging. A low-heat tumble dry with a couple of tennis balls will help it loft back up. If you are wondering [how to wash a puffer jacket](https://bushbuck.co.nz/blogs/campfire-chats/how-to-wash-a-puffer-jacket), follow the care label and finish with gentle heat. Avoid old dryers that run hot, since high heat can affect the fabric lamination.
- **Don't store it compressed.** Leaving a puffer down jacket squashed in a stuff sack for long periods makes it slower to loft back up when you need it.

## Wrap-Up

Four jackets, four different jobs: that's the whole idea behind our puffer range. Work out what you actually need it to do, and there's a Bushbuck puffer built around doing exactly that.

## Additional FAQs

**What's the difference between "waterproof" and "water resistant" on a puffer jacket?** Both terms describe the fabric's membrane, which blocks water either way. The difference comes down to the seams. If the seams are sealed, water can't get in anywhere, and it's called waterproof. If they're not sealed, water can eventually work through the stitch lines, so it's called water repellent instead.

**Why do feathers sometimes poke through the fabric on a new jacket?** It's a normal part of owning any puffer down jacket, with thousands of feathers inside, a few will occasionally work their way through a stitch line. It doesn't mean the jacket is faulty. Gently push the feather back through the fabric from the inside rather than pulling it out.

**What does "fill power" actually mean?** Fill power measures how much space a set weight of down expands to fill, not how much down is used. A higher number means better warmth for less weight. Baseline down sits around 500–600 fill power; our Altitude uses 700, and our Furnace, Polar X and Igloo puffer jackets use 800.

**How to wash a puffer jacket at home?** Down needs gentle heat to re-loft properly after being washed. A low-heat tumble dry with a couple of tennis balls helps it fluff back up. Avoid older dryers that run very hot, as excess heat can affect the fabric's waterproof lamination over time.

**Why doesn't the Igloo have pit zips?** Every zip is a potential point where water can get in. The Igloo is built to be fully waterproof, so we've left pit zips off entirely rather than compromise on that.

**What's the benefit of the packable chest pocket on the Altitude?** It lets the whole jacket stuff down into its own chest pocket for storage, using a stretch fabric lining so it compresses without needing bulky extra material. It's handy for saving pack space, though some people find it just as easy to pack it into the hood instead.

**Why is the Polar X more durable than the other jackets?** It uses a heavier nylon canvas fabric designed for abrasion resistance, aimed at people working in tough outdoor environments. It trades some weight for that extra toughness, with pit zips and reinforced sleeve panels for hard use.

**Is the down in Bushbuck jackets ethically sourced?** Yes. Our down is certified under the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), meaning it's sourced as a by-product of the meat industry under audited, ethical conditions.
